Challenge

Our client – a multinational data centre operator, required support to prepare for ISO 14001 certification.  They had recently undergone legal separation from a parent company. The certification and management systems were held and retained by the parent company and there was a risk the new legal entity would not achieve ISO 14001 certification independently.

Approach

In agreement with the Client, Telos conducted a desktop gap assessment of existing management systems and practices against the requirements of ISO 14001. The findings were risk ranked and presented to the Client for consideration.

It was then agreed that the best way to proceed was to develop and execute an action plan to close ISO 14001 conformance gaps.

Solution

In close collaboration with the Client, Telos developed an action plan to close the identified ISO 14001 conformance gaps. This included:

  • High-level lifecycle analysis
  • Site and corporate environmental aspects and impacts registers
  • Update of existing procedures and development and rollout of new procedures.

After initial preparatory works, Telos supported the client with internal audits while also enhancing the readiness of the site-level management teams.

Outcome

The Client progressed confidently through Stage 1 and Stage 2 of ISO 14001 certification audits at multiple operated data centres in Europe. The accredited certification body identified no non-conformities and only low risk opportunities for improvement.

The Client was awarded multi-site ISO 14001 certification, and Telos continues to provide environmental support for the Client on an ad hoc basis.
